Digital Landscape Photography
Text and photos by John & Barbara Gerlach
200 pages - 181 color images
This book explains the approach and "shooting workflow" we use to easily capture quality images - shot after shot - of the wonderful landscapes around us. The "shooting workflow" we and our gifted field workshop students developed together consistently yields superb images. It is fast, easy, and precise. In our field workshops, we regularly turn beginning photographers, who just bought their first digital DSLR, into solid landscape photographers in less than 48 hours. They easily master focusing, exposure, and shooting sharp images. Naturally, the creative side of photography and developing the "shooting eye" takes longer to develop.
Key tactics we cover in this book include back-button focusing, RGB histogram metering, the enormous advantages of manual metering, fill-flash, balanced flash, mirror lockup, techniques for sharp images, the power of live view, the awesome capability of HDR, panoramas, using lenses well, controlling your camera with custom functions, perspective choices, tilt and shift lenses, and so much more. Our book is overflowing with leading edge information. This book will help you capture stunning images of the landscape easily and efficiently!

The entire book stresses how to shoot high-quality images in the field. Since plenty of books already spend most of the time on improving images with software, we didn’t. Photographing California’s Eastern Sierra
Instructional DVD - 1 hour & 35 minutes
Filmed on location with John & Barbara Gerlach
At the dawn of my nature photography career, I quit my job, packed up everything I owned (it wasn’t much) into a pickup truck and wandered southwest to see and photograph for the first time new species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, wildflowers, and all other natural subjects. I had little money, but lot’s of hope, and even more ambition. I didn’t know how I would earn a living at nature photography, but, as often has been said, "necessity is the mother of invention."
My journey to California took weeks as I stopped to photograph, explore, and write along the way. I slept under the stars every night in remote meadows or forests because I couldn’t afford a campground. By mid-October, I arrived at the shores of incredible Mono Lake, marveling at all of the wildlife and strange tufa towers emerging from the water. Autumn colors in the Sierras were ablaze, unusual landscapes drew the attention of my camera, and the ghost town of Bodie was enchanting. I spend the next few years exploring this fabulous region of the Great Basin Desert and the Sierra Nevada Mountain range. Barbara and I return frequently to this wondrous place to make new images and fill our soul with the spirt of the place. From long first-hand experience, we can tell you California’s Eastern Sierra is truly a photographer’s paradise.
Please join us by watching our instructional DVD as we go on location to many superb places to photograph. We’ll visit the ghost town of Bodie, Mono Lake, Devil’s Postpile, Bristlecone Pine forest, Alabama Hills, Rainbow Falls, Fossil Falls, Mount Whitney, and so much more. As you view the DVD, take some notes and enjoy the scenery as you plan your own photo tour of California’s incredible Eastern Sierra!

Producing our first book and DVD was an exciting new opportunity that we thoroughly enjoyed. Both projects consumed a lot of time to meet our high standards, but it was worth it. John found that writing a book took dedication, but it was easier than he expected. Both John and Barbara have a knack for speaking while photographing, so the DVD was easy to film as well. Our book publisher and DVD company are eager to work with us on other projects, so plans for new products are already underway.
